Paddle the Green Harbor River

Until recently, those who wished to paddle a kayak, canoe or other non-motorized craft on the Green Harbor River had few appealing options for launch sites. They could pull to the side of Route 139 in Green Harbor and creep down the steep rocky embankment of the bridge at the Brant Rock Dike, or they could tramp hundreds of feet through overgrown brush and poison ivy. Other than that, there was nothing. But then things started happening at Peter Igo Park in Brant Rock, and now, not only is there reasonable access to the river, it’s slated for further improvement!

Marshfield Hires Goats for Poison Ivy Problem

Marshfield might be known for its Rams sports teams, but at Peter Igo Park, goats have taken the field.
The quadrupeds were on site at the park Aug. 27-Sept. 3 clearing invasive knotweed and poison ivy from the area at the corner of Marshall Avenue and Dyke Road.
“It’s the green way to go. There’s no noise, and no machinery. They’re self-contained,” said Bud Duksta, board chairman of Friends of Peter Igo Park.

Massachusetts DMF Awards $10K to Peter Igo Park

With the help of 'Friends of Peter Igo Park' and Marshfield Harbormaster, Mike Dimeo, the town of Marshfield and Peter Igo Park were recently awarded a $10,000 grant from the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries to improve access to the Green Harbor River for recreational fishermen, kayakers ,canoes, and paddle board enthusiasts. The Green Harbor River borders Peter Igo Park.

From left to right: Russ Ellis, Jay Wennemer (Town Conservation Agent), Tom Reynolds (DPW Superintendent), Ross Kessler (Mass. Division of Fisheries), Craig Alvey, Bud Duksta, Mike Dimeo (Marshfield Harbormaster), & Gary Covitz on a cold snowy Friday afternoon at Peter Igo Park.

On behalf of the Director of Marine Fisheries , we thank Marshfield and the ‘Friends of Peter Igo Park’ project is funded by your salt water fishing licenses. Projects like this are exactly what we had in mind when we started this program, and I am so glad that ‘Friends of Peter Igo’ applied. During the application process I saw the great work that the ‘Friends of Peter Igo Park’ Rangers had accomplished. We at Marine Fisheries are proud to be involved with this project and, personally, I cannot wait to catch a striped bass from this location.
— Ross Kessler , Recreational Fisheries Program Public Access Coordinator
What this group, the ‘Friends of Peter Igo Park’ have done over the last several months and continue to do is enormously helping our Green Harbor Restoration Project!
— Jay Wennemer, Town Conservation Agent
While helping to continue to improve access to the great Green Harbor River, this Grant helps the Towns’ continuing effort to improve Public Access to recreational space within the community.
— Tom Reynolds, DPW Superintendent
